The national exchequer suffered a colossal loss of big revenue on importing fertilizer for the agri-based economy of the country and this was not natural but was the result of minting money from the natural gas supply, which was all done under the instructions of the accused, Dr Asim Hussain, the Sindh Higher Education Commission Chairman and a bosom friend of former President Asif Ali Zardari.
The overall loss amounted to 450 billion while more clues of corruption would be obtained shortly as the investigation team is being engaged in this hectic case of corruption. This was stated by the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) prosecutor to the NAB court Wednesday. The accused, Dr Hussain, was produced in the NAB court. He was looking frail and hence was offered a chair to sit throughout the entire proceedings of this case yesterday.
The NAB prosecution told the NAB court that the accused had created an artificial gas crisis, which affected the fertilizer sector and the market price of locally produced fertilizer had suddenly jumped from Rs 850 to Rs 1530 per sack. In addition, the artificial gas crisis created a shortfall in fertilizer production and the state of Pakistan was constrained to place orders for import of fertilizer in huge quantity to meet the need of fertilizer of the local growers. The overall situation caused the exchequer to bear a loss of 450 billion.
Answering a question by the court, the prosecutor responded to the NAB court that the NAB investigation team is confident to obtain more evidence to prove the guilt of the accused and thus the investigations would shortly be completed. The defending lawyers of the accused told the NAB court that none of the law enforcing authorities has yet proved any guilt of the accused.
He said that though the accused has been shifted to a hospital under court's order he is being tormented by presence of three cops inside his room. Moreover, meetings of the accused with his family have also been restricted. The NAB court in its remarks said that no cop would be authorised to stay inside the room of the accused and adjourned the hearing until February 9, 2016.
Meanwhile, Medical Board head Dr Syed Haroon Ahmed had suddenly left for abroad. Dr Haroon is heading the medical board that examined the accused on complaints of family of the accused. Dr Hussain is presently admitted in the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment of certain psychopathic ailments, he had complained of.
