Sheikh Ansar Aziz of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz became first mayor of the federal capital on Monday defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Khurram Shehzad. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) held election for mayor and three deputy mayors in Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI). In an unofficial count, Ansar bagged 49 votes and PTI candidate managed to secure only 26.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz PML-N's Sheikh Ansar Aziz had filed nomination papers for the office of mayor of the federal capital along with his three deputy mayors - Zeeshan Ali Naqvi, Chaudhry Rifhat Javed and Muhammad Azam. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Raja Khurram Shehzad was contesting for the seat of mayor while Ali Nawaz Awan, Raja Zulqarnain Haider and Fauzia Arshad for the seats of deputy mayors, respectively. Elected chairpersons from 50 union councils of the federal capital along with 27 members from reserved seats were to elect mayor and deputy mayors. There was an electoral college of 77 members for this election. The secret balloting for the election of mayor and deputy mayors began at 9am and concluded at 5pm at Jinnah Convention Centre. The ECP will announce the results today (Tuesday).
