Senior leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Dr Farooq Sattar on Sunday accused Rangers and police of forcing the inmates of jail, belonging to the party, to change their loyalties.
Speaking at a press conference at the party's headquarters `Nine Zero', he said: "MQM workers of the central jail's four barracks are passing through mental agonies as they are being subjected to state repression and lured to change their loyalties in exchange of rewards."
He alleged that 40 party workers languishing in the central jail have been sent to the 'band wards' and there they were being forced to sign `something' and strike a deal for clearing them of their cases.
He also alleged that MQM MNAs and MPAs were being advised to switch over their loyalties to the still unnamed party without taking name of Mustafa Kamal, besides family members of missing and interned MQM workers were receiving threatening calls from unlisted phone numbers. The MQM leader appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Raheel Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah to take notice of such conspiracies. He also appealed to courts and human rights organisations to take notice of violation of jail rules.
Sattar also claimed that MQM MNAs and MPAs were being threatened by unknown callers.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister's Adviser Maula Bux Chandio termed the claims of Dr Sattar `baseless', saying all jail inmates were being treated as per Jail manual. "Have we changed the loyalties of Afaq Ahmad and Mustafa Kamal," he asked, adding that the MQM should answer this.
