National Assembly Sub-Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms met at Parliament House on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Zahid Hamid and other members of the committee also attended the meeting.
According to the committee's notification, the meeting confirmed the minutes of the 52nd meeting of the Sub-Committee. Chairman National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) briefed on the proposal for making available copy of electoral rolls with photograph to the contesting candidates before the election.
Arif Alvi also briefed on the progress of work entrusted to Sub-Committee under his convenor-ship and the Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on draft of unified election law and election rules.
All the political parties are involved in the process of electoral reforms. The committee has conducted 14 meetings while its Sub-Committee having members of legal back-ground met 52 times, besides 65 meetings were held with the relevant institutions and other stakeholders till now and had reviewed seven laws related to the election process in the country.
The "Unified Election Act" and "Unified Election Rules" are in the final stage.
The committee received recommendations of about 4,500 pages from different sections of the society regarding electoral reforms.
Another sub-committee headed by Arif Alvi constituted to give recommendations on voting rights for overseas Pakistanis, use of Electronic Voting Machines and Bio-Metric Verification of the voters submitted its report to Sub-Committee headed by Zahid Hamid.
The ECP would need 300,000 machines for electronic voting and a single machine costs minimum $1000. The final draft about electronic voting, right to vote for overseas Pakistanis and electoral reforms will be presented in the Parliament.
