As many as 1866 students received degrees in their respective disciplines at 26th Annual Convocation 2015 of the University of Karachi held at varsity's ground on Saturday. The topper of the varsity was awarded the gold medal named after the Martyrs of Army Public School Peshawar. PhD degrees were also conferred on 145 students. In the Presidential address Senior Minister of Education Sindh and Pro Chancellor Karachi University Nisar Khuhro said KU is not only recognized nationally for its high level of academics but globally as well.
He congratulated Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser the Vice Chancellor for successfully organizing the Annual Convocation for the fourth consecutive time in his tenure. "I was also a student of KU and what I have achieved today is just because of Karachi University. KU is a magnificent success story since last 65 years. All the students must take the full use of their academic credentials while serving the nation with the best of their abilities," he added.
He called for abolishing quotas in the admission policy of KU and said that open merit admissions must be ensured. He said government of Sindh is spending billions of rupees in the education sector would continue its economic support to the University of Karachi and one day 50,000 students would be enrolled in this university. "Students of today are the leaders of tomorrow and they have a great responsibility on their shoulders to work for the prosperity and uplift of their nation in their fields," he said.
He announced an additional salary of one month to all the grade 1 to 16 non-teaching employees of KU. Vice Chancellor KU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser said that Karachi University is a one of the most prestigious center of learning of higher education in Pakistan and it's indeed a great honour of mine to welcome you all at the 26th Annual Convocation 2015 as the Vice Chancellor.
KU is a model educational institution for all the academic and educational institutions of the country which is globally recognized due to its highly efficient faculty and research output adding to those more than 35,000 students are enrolled in the varsity that includes many foreign students as well. He said KU faculty is composed of highly qualified and distinguished scholars who are recognized globally. 486 research papers from KU faculty members have been published in Impact Factor Journals of the world.
During my tenure, he said record selection boards had been held and 116 faculty members were recruited in 27 selection boards held since last three years. Despite facing serious financial crisis, KU is on its path of progress and achieving new heights of high quality academic and academic growth.
During 2015, 204 PhD and 69 M.Phil degrees were awarded to the meritorious students. 1124 students are enrolled in PhD program while 1951 students are enrolled in M.Phil program right now. KU has awarded 3837 PhD degrees from 1958 to 2015 in the Faculties of Social Sciences, Science, Islamic Studies, Law, Pharmacy, Medicine, Management and Administrative Sciences. KU has signed MoUs with various national and foreign universities in collaboration in the field of research and academics in which there are 10 foreign universities, Dr Qaiser maintained.
