The Executive Board Meeting (EBM) of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday decided to file three references against corrupt elements. The meeting held under the chairmanship of NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry here decided to file former Provincial Minister for Food Balochistan Asfand Yar Kakar and others for allegedly committing embezzlement.
The accused persons including Asfand Yar Kakar, former Secretary Food, Balochistan, Ali Bakhsh Baloch and others were alleged for embezzlement in government wheat amounting to Rs 1525.0122 million from Provincial Reserve Center Sariab, Quetta. The second corruption reference was decided to file against Sheikh Muhammad Afzal, Chief Executive/Director Harris Steel Industry Pvt Ltd, Lahore and others. In this case, the accused were alleged for obtaining illegal pecuniary benefits through corrupt, dishonest and illegal means and thereby caused corresponding loss to the NIB Bank Ltd.
The third reference was decided to file against Ex-Vice Chancellor of Bahauddin Zikria University (BZU) Multan, Professor Syed Khawaja Alqama, Ex-Registrar of BZU Multan, Malik Munir Hussain and others. In this case the accused in connivance with each other illegally established BZU Sub-Campus at Lahore by misusing their authority and illegally obtained benefits to tune of Rs 960 million.
The Executive Board also decided to authorise complaint verification against Azhar Qayum Nahra, MNA NA-100 and Mudassir Qayum Nahra, Ex-MNA NA-100 and others. In this case, the accused persons were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices and amassing huge assets beyond known sources of income.
The meeting authorised two inquiries. The first inquiry was authorised against Javed Ahmed Siddiqui, Ex MPA (PP-197) Multan and others. In this case, the accused person is alleged for accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income. The second inquiry was authorised against officials of Ministry of Food Security and Research. In this case, the accused were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices which caused a loss of millions of rupees to national exchequer.
The EBM also decided to authorise investigation against government functionaries and other. In this case, the accused were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices and misusing their authority in award of RPPs contract to GE Energy, Pvt Ltd at Sharkpur. The EBM decided to close two inquiries. One inquiry against officers/officials of Ministry of Railways and others regarding Procurement of 69 locomotives and second inquiry against officers/officials of Ministry of Railways and others regarding procurement of 1300 wagons due to lack of incriminating evidence.
In a case against government functionaries and others, regarding corruption/corrupt practices and misuse of authority by placement of Rs 500 million with Trust Investment Bank Limited (TIBL) by Privatisation Commission, the EBM decided to approve the Voluntary Return (VR) request of Asif Kamal, Chairman Trust Investment Bank Limited (TBL) of Rs 404.8 million.
Addressing the meeting, the Chairman reiterated that NAB was committed to eradicating corruption and corrupt practices by adopting holistic and proactive approach through enforcement, besides awareness and prevention strategy across the country. He directed all officers/officials of NAB to put in their best efforts in conduct of complaint verification, inquiries and investigations against corrupts in accordance with laid down laws/ standard operating procedures, transparently and on merit.
