Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Chairman Baig Group & former Advisor to PM on Textile while representing Trade & Industry of Pakistan met Her Excellency Ameenah Gurib Fakim, President of Mauritius in Karachi to discuss possible collaboration in the field of textile between Pakistan & Mauritius, the tourism & textile industry had spearheaded structural transformation of the Mauritian economy.
The President of Mauritius advised Dr Baig and his delegation to take advantage of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) allowing duty free export from Mauritius. A Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) was signed between Pakistan & Mauritius allowing concessionary duties on import of 130 Pakistani products including textile but Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries still to be signed.
Dr Baig advised President of Mauritius to activate FPCCI Pakistan Mauritius Joint Business Council signed with Mauritius Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) to enhance trade & investment between two countries & proposed its inaugural meeting in Mauritius in August 2016. Dr Baig and the President of Mauritius have agreed to hold Pakistan Week in Mauritius in August 2016 on the occasion of Pakistan National Day. CEO TDAP SM Muneer and President FPCCI Abdul Rauf Alam have announced to organise single country exhibition in Manutius by TDAP in collaboration with FPCCI and SM Muneer to lead the businessmen delegation to Mauritius. Those attended the meeting with Dr Baig were Shahzad Arshad of Rauf Textile and Athar Ahmed of Potential of Pakistan. The President of Mauritius was assisted by her 10-member delegation comprising Minister of Foreign Affairs, DG Board of Investment & Mauritius Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ambassador of Mauritius to Pakistan Yusuf Elahee, Sohail Yasin Suleman Hon. Consul of Mauritius in Karachi & senior officials from Mauritius. Dr Baig thanked Seema Mughal, Vice Chancellor of Greenwich University for her initiative to arrange said meeting with the visiting President and delegation of Mauritius.-PR
