Public awareness about the genetic disease thalassemia has been the chief ingredient of the theme "access to safe and effective drugs in thalassamia" as countries worldwide, including Pakistan, are gearing up to mark the World Thalassemia Day 2016 on May 8. Various organisations, including non-government organisations will stage walks, seminars and workshops. Health experts said thalassemia is a hereditary disease of the blood caused by genetic defects in a patient's body which results in production of an abnormal form of haemoglobin, thus causing anaemia.
About 100,000 babies worldwide are born with severe forms of thalassemia each year. Children suffering from the disease on Friday spent a memorable day at the Government College University Lahore and visited the library, classes and academic departments and then led on-campus awareness walk with the vice chancellor, faculty and students to highlight the importance of blood donation and parental diagnosis of the disease.
