The Punjab government is to file a response by May 30 after the Lahore High Court sought details of the former's steps to protect labours working on the Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project. The follow-up of the project case came up on Tuesday following the court's hearing of a string of petitions. The petitioners' Lawyer, Azhar Siddique, told the court that lack of precautionary steps by the provincial government or project contractors had resulted in the deaths of 20 labours at the various sites of the construction.
He then talked about the death of a patient for lack of ventilator at the Mayo Hospital which observed an eight-hour long power-cut because of the ongoing project. He also said the government had been denying that the project was part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor though its lawyers during the course of a hearing on January 21 had admitted otherwise. The lawyer finally asked the court to ensure that the controversial project was never part of the Corridor, because of "its sensitivity and economic viability".
