Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's government is trying to provide employment opportunities through revival of industrial sector and for this purpose 40 new industrial units are being commissioned in the province.
According to a White Paper of the annual provincial budget for 2016-17, the provincial government is making efforts to promote industrialisation through special policies and incentive package. The efforts are aimed at revival of sick industrial units as well as increasing skill manpower through robust technical education programme.
Out of the 2881 total industrial units of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2192 are operational while 362 units remain non-functional.
To protect the consumer rights, the provincial government has enacted Consumer Protection Law to ensure the protection of the consumer rights. The Consumer Protection Courts have been established in 17 districts to provide not only relief to consumers, but also to ensure the standard of production.
Furthermore, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Industrial Policy 2016 (KPIP-2016) is based on creating employment opportunities by a facilitating environment to set up new industrial units in new special economic zones and to expand their existing industrial set-up in existing industrial estates.
The purpose of the steps initiated by the KP government is to achieve the objectives of creating highly conducive environment for entrepreneurs to operate and/or set up industrial units in the province.
The KP government also encourages to capitalise on the district strengths such as agriculture produce, minerals and other natural resources such as coal, gas and hydel energy; promote trade and commerce with Afghanistan and Central Asian states in a manner to make the KP as the food basket and process consumer goods suppliers to Afghanistan and other Central Asian states.
The provincial government wants to promote heavy industry to further develop the technical capabilities and related vendor industries; assist and facilitate small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to burgeon, and create more jobs through provision of support services including financial support; attract the FDI and local investment through creation of special economic zones to setup industries added incentives.
Similarly, the provincial government wants to improve industrial infrastructure and other facilities through public private partnership modalities; train the industrial human resource through both public and private sector training organisations and harness opportunities arising from China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by setting up industrial zones and logistics parks along the corridor.
