Three major hospitals of the city, the Dow Medical Institute, Memon Hospital and Kiran Hospital that are frequently visited by thousands of patients and ambulances carrying patients daily cannot be easily accessed owing to the dilapidated condition of roads leading towards these hospitals. The entire length of the main Karachi University road from Safoora right up to Kiran Hospital is in a dilapidated condition and in dire need of urgent repairs. Owing to this, traffic mishaps are very frequent on the road from Safoora leading to Kiran Hospital due to the countless potholes and ditches. Although, motor vehicles tax is dutifully collected by authorities from motorists, there is not a single road in the city of Karachi that is fit for vehicles to safely drive on.
Furthermore, the total lack of a proper drainage system in Karachi is one of the a major contributors of damage to roads, as sewerage water overflowing from choked drains and sewers erodes road surface causing large potholes and eventually ruination of roads.
The present situation of roads across Karachi, which since long have been ignored by the authorities, today has evolved into a very painful and distressing problem not only for motorists but also for most citizens. As for the main University road, utter disregard to the plight of motorists and the general public by civic authorities in Karachi is evident as no serious concern or effort to rehabilitate this particular road is to be seen, lamented an ambulance driver to this scribe.
"Due to the dilapidated condition of the University road, ambulances rushing patients to hospital face great race of mishaps, he added. Many other ambulance drivers opined, "there is total apathy on the part of Karachi's civic authorities in addressing this particular issue of major concern, while adding, that during monsoon rains the situation gets even worse as choked drains cause rain water to flood the University road, causing untold hardships to thousands of motorists/motorcyclist and the general public and further also increasing the risk of fatal road mishaps.
