The government is making all out efforts to improve job opportunities for youth with its focus on strengthening the field of Science and Technology. This was stated by Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for the Science and Technology while addressing at the inaugural session of a 3-day Training Workshop being convened with the cooperation of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)-ECO in Pakistan.
He said that the progress in the field of Science and Technology will simultaneously benefit the national economy and skilled youth enjoying skills related to modern technologies will create additional job opportunities.
Rana Tanveer, who is also Minister of Defence Production (MoDP), said that the country should establish a company committed to driving defence exports and the step would enable the country to not only create additional jobs but enhance national exports as well.
He welcomed the participants from the ECO countries, saying that it was a positive notion to hold such workshops with such level of serious participation.
The minister appreciated the efforts of the attached organisations for organising such a workshop in cooperation with the UNIDO and ECO, which included; PSQCA, PNAC, NPSL and PSCIR. He said that with increasing national interests in maintaining standards and quality of production in industries, the country can improve exports at greater level. He said this will not only strengthen our national exchequer but also benefit the over-all trade markets of the ECO Member countries in the International Market.
The third phase of UNIDO-ECO cooperation project "Achieving Good Governance and Sustainability through Quality Policy Formulation in the ECO Region" was launched in 2014 for the period of three years. The project is composed of two major outputs: 1. Development of a Regional Quality Policy for the ECO region and; 2. Support to ECO Member States for National Quality Policy formulation by developing a guideline and training capacity for policy elaboration.
Rana Tanveer Hussain said that he was pleased to have this Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on National Quality Policy Guide being held in Pakistan, saying that since 2004, the UNIDO has been consistently providing technical assistance to the Government of Pakistan through its Trade-Related Technical Assistance Programme (TRTA).
Quality experts from Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) member states are participating in three-day workshop from 18-20 July 2016 to develop guiding principles for the Development of National Quality Policies (DNQP) for ECO countries.
The expert group meeting is funded and organised by the UNIDO and ECO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan.
Under the current cooperation between UNIDO and ECO, a draft Regional Quality Policy for the ECO region was developed last year based on consultations with high level officials and experts from the ECO Member States. To ensure the implementation and effectiveness of the Regional Quality Policy and to support ECO Member States to develop corresponding National Quality Policies, the Expert Group Meeting is being organised in Pakistan aiming at the development of guiding principles for the establishment of National Quality Policies. The Expert Group meeting will also provide opportunities for network building among experts across ECO Member States for information/experience sharing and strengthening of cooperation. The UNIDO is the lead technical UN Agency in the field of Quality Infrastructure (QI) development and assists many countries around.

The project is composed of two major outputs: 1. Development of a Regional Quality Policy for the ECO region and; 2. Support to ECO Member States for National Quality Policy formulation by developing a guideline and training capacity for policy elaboration.
Under the output 1, the Regional Quality Policy was developed in consultation with ECO Member States through two high level workshops: 1) UNIDO-ECO High-Level Workshop on the Development of a Regional Quality Policy and Quality Policy Implementation Matrix for the ECO Region, held in Tehran, Iran on 3-4 February 2015 and; 2) UNIDO-ECO Validation Workshop on Draft Regional Quality Policy and Quality Policy Implementation Matrix for the ECO Region, held in Gebze and Ankara on 14-16 September 2015. In parallel to the Validation Workshop, Workshop Training on Lead Master Trainers was held in Ankara on 17 September 2015.
This workshop aims to finalise the draft Guide for the Development of National Quality Policy (NQP Guide), prepared by UNIDO.
