The next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards is to be tested in Berlin, according to plans made known over the weekend by Deutsche Telekom and the Germany Senate Office for Economics.
"In the global competition of digital metropolises, the (German) capital can take a leading position," said Economics Senator Cornelia Yzer.
According to a report by the Berliner Morgenpost daily, a broadcast facility for the fifth generation (5G) networks will be housed among others in a high-rise former radio-television facility near Berlin's Technical University.
The network will give a radius of around 1 kilometre, in which 5G applications will be tested in real time.
"With this we will become a German reference point for the introduction of 5G technology in a public sphere," Yzer told the Morgenpost.
The information technology and telecommunications industry in Germany sees in 5G technology a chance for the country to gain more importance in the field.
Expected to be market-ready in 2020, 5G technology is significantly faster than the present high-speed wireless communications standard LTE.
