Balochistan has the lowest literacy and highest infant mortality rate among all provinces of Pakistan. Despite its rich natural resources, the people of Balochistan suffer from lack of basic necessities such as clean drinking water, healthcare facilities and electricity. These people have to suffer drinking water from the same sources as their animals and use oil lanterns and fire sticks for lighting purposes which emit toxic elements. It would be fair to say that a major portion of Balochistan's 13 million population is still living in the 19th century!
While visiting these areas and seeing the plight of poor people, we were stuck by their miserable living conditions. HELP (Health, Education and Livelihood Promoters) has been focusing to improve the lives of the poorest segment of coalminers and underprivileged people of Balochistan by providing them sustainable living conditions, basic necessities such as clean drinking water, healthcare facilities, education and electricity, especially in far-flung bare mountainous areas.
The HELP has initiated a project 'Light of Hope' through which we are providing the poor coalminers and their families portable solar lights. The project will cover the areas of District Loralai consisting of approximately 2,000 residences and 15,000 beneficiaries.
We feel this is a very significant initiative to take these people out of the shadows that is possible only with the help of the well-to-do people of the country. They do not have any means to end their misfortune. We therefore appeal to the wealthy segment of society to come forward and join hands with us so that some poor souls can benefit from a new light in their lives!
