Qamar Zaman Kaira may be next president of the Pakistan Peoples' Party Punjab, said party sources on Monday. Head of the co-ordination committee for central Punjab, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed, said he would submit the committee's recommendations to the party chairman in Islamabad.
"I am on my way to put recommendations before the party chairman and he is likely to decide the fate of party president ship for Punjab in a day or so," he added. However, he pointed out that the name of Kaira has yet not been finalised by the party chairman. But he admitted in the same breath that he may be part of the list being forwarded to the chairman.
It may be noted that a recent meeting of Qamar Zaman Kaira and Syed Khurshid Ali Shah with Bilawal Bhutto in Karachi had led to rumours that Bilawal had convinced Kaira to lead the party in central Punjab. It was followed by his fiery speech at the rally of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad on The Mall Road.
It is worth mentioning that earlier Kaira had refused to command the party in Punjab after serving as the central information secretary of the party. Chaudhry Manzoor agreed with the impression that there were strong rumours regarding appointment of Kaira as Punjab president after his meeting with the party chairman. "But I had checked with the central secretariat which denied any such development," he said, adding that the much talked about meeting of Kaira and Khurshid with Bilawal was with regard to some other party issues, and not the president ship of Punjab. He said the chairman would decide about the fate of party's leadership in Punjab after receiving recommendations from the co-ordination committee.
