The businesses asked the government to scale back the GST rate to a single digit to improve purchasing power of the poor, saying that the inflation has affected the ordinary citizens' living standards and population of poor is increasing. Despite peace in the major business centre due to Zarb-i-Azb, the investors feared the fresh investments were still far from taking roots in the private sector due to the want of better economic policies of the government.
"There is a lot of potential from economic growth in Punjab with peace taking place. However, investors are still reluctant to pour their wealth into expanding the existing businesses," President of Multan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) Khawaja Jalaluddin Roomi told Business Recorder, saying that "Start-ups are unlikely to emerge without a government support".
"No business can afford to employ more than a need," he said, adding that the taxation system had to be put right to ensure economic stability for a long time. "The GST should be a single digit at least nine percent to help the businesses rejuvenate," he said, asking the government to ensure its presence in shape of better facilities to the citizens at their doorsteps, adding that "the government is just there to collect heavy taxes from public and not for providing them with facilities." He said that none of the government's departments were functional to solve the public problems.
