The Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notices to the finance ministry and others for October 20 in a petition challenging tax amnesty scheme for traders. The petitioner advocate, Sheraz Zaka, argued that the scheme was discriminatory as it was passed by the parliament through income tax amendment act 2016 for traders only. He said through this amnesty the traders had been given exemption from audit as well as from filing wealth statement till 2018. He argued that these traders had also been exempted from paying taxes for the past 10 years.
The lawyer stated that instead of bringing structural reforms, the federal board of revenue was giving cushion to the traders and added that other classes like lawyers and doctors should also be facilitated. He therefore asked to the court to strike down the tax amnesty scheme for being discriminatory.
