The Government College University (GCU) Lahore has announced establishing "Anti-Narcotics Society" to involve its students in combating the increasing use of drugs among the educated youth, especially in elite institutions, through awareness and support of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Punjab.
"Students just get involved in these negative activities in their own race of 'modernisation' and 'socialisation,' said Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Hassan Amir Shah while addressing an on-campus walk against the "Drug of Abuse" organized by the university's Dunnicliff Chemical Society and ANF Punjab. The walk was also attended by the ANF Punjab Force Commander Brigadier Khalid Mehmood Goraya, noted comedian and social worker Iftikhar Thakur, veteran TV actor Rashid Mehmood, GCU Chemistry Department Chairperson Professor Dr Ahmad Adnan, Registrar Saboor Khan and a large number of social workers, faculty members and students.
The Vice Chancellor said that their students would work as youth ambassadors and support for ANF Punjab for eradicating this evil from all the education institutions of the province. Besides, Professor Shah said that GCU focusing on academics and research, actively involved its students in healthy co-curricular and sports activities which kept them away from all kind of negative and evil activities.
Addressing the participants of the walk, Brigadier Khalid Goraya said Afghanistan was the world's leading producer and cultivator of opium and cannabis, and Pakistan's geographical proximity and porous border with Afghanistan made it highly vulnerable to narcotics. He highlighted that the number of drug addict teenagers especially in private colleges and universities were increasing day-by-day which needs to be checked.
The Force Commander also explained their efforts to control and stop drug trafficking particularly across borders. He educated the youth about different kinds of prevailing Narco-Dugs, their negative effects on health and role of students in eliminating this curse from this sacred land. Iftikhar Thakur and Rashid Mehmood also held that modern lifestyle was the root cause of drug use among the youngsters.
He said the culture of drug parties would have devastating effects on the society. He said that parents and teachers had a great role for saving the youth from drugs.
