The Institute of Road Safety Traffic Environment Pakistan (IRSTEP), focused on preventing Road Traffic accidents, conducted a Road Safety Stakeholder Conference on the theme "Sustainable Public Transport - Time to Act" to mark the World Remembrance Day for the Victims of Road Traffic Accidents.
Various delegates participated in the conference to improve Road safety and Sustainable Public Transport such as the Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Climate Change, WHO, UNDP Sustainable Transport Project, Punjab's Provincial Departments of Transport, Health, Education, Environment, Local Government, National Highways & Motorways Police, National Highway Authority, Punjab Traffic Police, LDA, District Management, Automotive Industry, Traffic Engineers, Regional Planners, NGOs, Insurance and Business Leaders - and exchanged ideas on how to embark on road traffic safety.
Speaking on the occasion, Parvez Ghias, CEO Indus Motor Company (IMC), said that "Roads are an integral part of our society, that connect people and sustain livelihood of the people, in order to ensure fundamental human right of safety and wellbeing. We cannot emphasise the importance of road safety enough."
Speaking on the growing issue of road related problems in Karachi, he commented, "The increasingly deplorable road conditions in Karachi, especially on the National Highway, have resulted in huge losses to businesses and people alike in terms of congestion and injuries due to poor road conditions.
A study by IMC, published in 2014 revealed that a single major stretch of road from the Karachi Airport till the Steel Mill costs US $2.5 billion to Karachi's economy."-PR
