An Anti-Terrorism Court on Thursday convicted sixth suspect Mumtaz Sindhi in attack on a vigil held by civil society members to mark fifth death anniversary of Salman Taseer. Mumtaz Sindhi was convicted for a collective imprisonment of sixteen-and-a-half-year under five different provisions of the laws.
The court handed down five-year jail term to Sindhi under section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, three-and-half-year under section 365 of PPC, two-year under section 149 of PPC and three-year under 153-A of PPC and three-year under section 148 of PPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the convict.
The court had awarded the same punishment to five suspects in July 2015. They include Adeel, Furqan, Kashif, Iftikhar and Wazir Ali. Mumtaz Sindhi was proclaimed offender and police arrested him at a later stage and put him to the trial. The Lahore High Court had already dismissed appeals of the five convicts against their sentence.
More than a dozen baton-wielding men had attacked the participants in the candlelight vigil held at Liberty Chowk in Lahore to mark the death anniversary of Salman Taseer on January 4, 2015.
