Approving the establishment of the Sindh Curriculum Authority, Sindh chief minister chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah have the go-ahead on Wednesday for the recruitment of 6,000 teachers in the province. He was presiding over a meeting of the Education Department at the Chief Minister's House.
The education secretary told the chief minister said that there are 5,384 closed schools in the province, of which 4,123 are viable and could be made functional. In light of the education emergency imposed by the chief minister, 1,461 schools have been opened.
The chief minister said that recruitment of teachers must be made on merit and there will be no compromise on this. "I want to visit these schools which should be opened by the end of March, so that the new target to improve the education system in the province could be set," he said.
About the curriculum, the chief minister said that he went through the textbooks of classes from the primary to the higher classes. "I am sorry to say I am not satisfied with the content and quality of the curriculum," he said. He added that the curriculum must be in accordance with the latest requirements and standards. The chief minister approved the establishment of the Sindh Curriculum Authority to redesign the curriculum, keeping in view the standards being practiced in other provinces, and in countries like Sri Lanka, and then impart trainings to the teachers on how to teach in accordance with the new curriculum. There is dire need for redesigning the curriculum and teaching skills must be based on the latest teaching trends and techniques being practiced in other countries. He asked the provincial minister of education to prepare a detailed briefing on the repair and maintenance of school building, an on enrolment, and schoolchildren's dropout ratio so that a future strategy could be evolved.
