Media plays a key role in the democratic societies as it builds public opinion and acts as a watchdog and hence the media persons are required to produce research-based and factual news stories, said Ambassador of Denmark, Ole Thonke, here on Tuesday. Speaking at the Journalism Excellence Award ceremony organised by the International Media Support (IMS) in collaboration with Individual land Pakistan (IL), he said that right to access to information and freedom of expression are preconditions for transparent public debate and protection of basic human rights.
He said that promotion of freedom, democracy and respect of human rights are the key priorities for foreign policy not only in Pakistan, but also across the world. "Denmark's support to freedom of expression and a free and diverse media is intended to contribute to the development of a platform for democratic debate, reducing poverty, promoting peace and security in Pakistan," he remarked.
Later, the envoy gave awards to 11 winners, belonging to both the print and electronic media for their outstanding journalism and reporting skills and for highlighting regional issues relating to national development. The IL Pakistan's executive director, Gulmina Bilal, said that despite lack of facilities in many far-flung areas, the journalists showed great enthusiasm and worked very hard in developing important stories for the national mainstream audience. The ceremony held under IL's small grants programme was aimed at recognising the best news stories from various regions, showcasing critical analysis and information on important issues from their local areas.
