After the Panama Papers case verdict by the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan, President Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and Emir Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Siraj-ul-Haq held a meeting at Lal Haveli, Rawalpindi, on Friday to unite opposition parties for anti-government drive.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Siraj and Sheikh Rasheed said that after the SC verdict the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is no more clean, therefore he must resign, otherwise opposition will mobilise the masses for anti-government drive. They said both the future chief justices of Pakistan have disqualified PM Nawaz Sharif for the public office, adding that politics has been transformed into trade.
Replying to a question Siraj said that under the current political scenario if opposition comes with a single point joint agenda of the PM's resignation, it will be considered a significant achievement. The JI chief has framed his party's move against the sitting Prime Minister as part of its ongoing campaign against corruption. "Nawaz's respect lies in resigning and conducting a free investigation into the case," he maintained. "The SC verdict is not the destination, but a step forward towards success."
Rasheed said that he has taken the responsibility of bringing opposition parties on one platform, adding that he will start meeting heads and leaders of other political parties to convince them to jointly launch an anti-government drive. Sheikh Rasheed said that opposition needs to put pressure on the PM for his resignation. "I will also contact leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP)," Rasheed asserted. It will be better for the government if Nawaz Sharif steps down allowing a free and transparent inquiry into the allegations, he added.
