Leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) Farooq Sattar reiterated his party's position at a huge protest rally on Sunday that MQM would get local bodies' representatives legitimate rights and financial powers through Supreme Court (SC) under the article 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan.
"We shall file a petition in the Supreme Court to seek its intervention to implement article 140-A of the Constitution within a couple of days," he said speaking at his party's 'Sunno Karachi' rally in front of the mausoleum of founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The MQM supporter kicked off their rally from Liaquatabad No. 10 at around 3 p.m. and culminated it at the Old Numaish roundabout at 9:30 p.m.
A large number of MQM-P workers and supporters including women and children carrying party flags, and banners attended the rally.
Farooq Sattar said that the mayors of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana would soon get justice from the apex court of law. He vowed to resolve the issues of the people of urban Sindh.
He accused PPP-led Sindh government of having done nothing to serve the masses. He said Karachi was in a dilapidated condition and Karachiites long for clean drinking water. He said people suffer due to poor healthcare, education and civic infrastructure and all this has become the hallmark of Urban Sindh.
"Today, we have come out of homes to fight the case of urban autonomy," he asserted.
Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar said that despite financial problems, KMC was making its efforts to resolve problems such as removal of heaps of garbage, provision of clean drinking water, education and healthcare.
"I made all-out efforts to work together with the provincial government since I assumed the office. I have written several letters to the chief minister requesting him to support the local bodies system for the sake of betterment of the city but to no avail," he said.
Akhtar blamed the provincial government of being highly incompetent and indifferent towards resolving the city issues. He said government was competent only for corruption as it had embezzled billions of rupees in the guise of development in rural Sindh. He said that entire province was against the bad governance of Sindh Government.
Karachi mayor asked the local councils representatives belonging to various political parties and the masses to back him in his fight for the rights of Karachi.
He said the city's population was increasing rapidly, but resources were far less to cope with the challenges. He said he had launched a 100-day 'Clean City Campaign,' which was successfully completed.
He vowed to begin another phase of similar drive before the coming Ramazan. He asked the political parties and people from different walks of life to participate in his campaign.
Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Khwaja Izharul Hassan said that 60 percent literate population of the Sindh strongly rejected the leaders of PPP. He said feudalism was the biggest problem of the country.
"People want to get rid of the Wadera System in Sindh. The next Budget will be the last Budget from the PPP," he said, expressing hope that MQM-P would sweep the 2018 elections and form government in the Sindh.
