Goods transporters on Wednesday announced to end their nine-day long strike on Governor Sindh''s assurance to resolve their passage issues. The transporters, whom Sindh Assembly''s Speaker, Aga Siraj Khan Durrani and Sindh Transporter Minister, Nasir Hussain Shah held a meeting, told a gathering about ending the strike. However, goods transporters asked the Sindh government to ensure safety to the truckers as no police, traffic constables and customs officials should take bribe from them while passing through the city.
Chairman Sindh Tajir Ittehad, Shaikh Habib asked the government to waive off the seaport demurrages that became overdue to the imported cargo containers stuck at harbour for non-availability of transport to supply. "The strike brought the country''s imports and exports to a halt and struck the national economy badly," he said.
With resumption of transportations, traders believe they will escape huge financial loss with keeping their international orders intact to supply the global markets exports on time. "Rs 6 billion of loss, the exporters face every day since the strike has started," they said.
The goods transporters strike triggered a massive congestions at the country''s seaports as imported goods piled up that were bound for the upcountry since there was no carriers available to supply the containers out of the harbour. "Two ships on Tuesday left the country''s seaports unloaded as there was no export cargo available at the berths," exporters said. Several attempts were made to take opinion of the Spokesman for Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance on the strike calling off but he did not attend the phone.
