Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar on Monday said that the garbage collection contract that was awarded to a Chinese company has failed despite huge spending. "Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has completely failed to resolve the cleanliness issues of the citizens," he said speaking at an inaugural ceremony of a cricket pavilion and indoor games hall in Annu Bhai Park Nazimabad. He urged the Board to take the city's sanitation issue, seriously.
He said that one can witness movement of garbage lifting vehicles, placement of dustbins and handcarts in the parts of the two districts for which contract was awarded. He accused the PPP-led Sindh government of splurging huge money of failed project. According to rough estimates, the city was producing some 12,000 tons of garbage daily. The civic utility can hardly manage lifting of only 4000 tones only.
The South district was producing some 1,300 tons of garbage in a day and ranked highest among the districts whereas the district east was producing some 1,000 tons of garbage on a daily basis. It is pertinent to mention here that Sindh Solid Waste Management Board had awarded the contract of garbage collection and lifting to a Chinese company in the two out of the six districts of Karachi. The agreement in this regard was signed a few months back. In the initial phase of the agreement, the company has been collecting waste in South and East districts.
