Pakistan should mediate between the parties, not get involved in sectarian wars in the region, former president Pervez Musharraf told a press conference here on Wednesday. Speaking at his home, the former president, who is chairman of his All Pakistan Muslim League, criticised the policies of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, describing these it as a total failure and accusing it of pursuing policies which jeopardised the country's internal and external situation leading to its isolating.
The former president emphasised the need for an alliance of opposition parties to pull the country out of a chaotic situation. Political personalities who met him included Sahibzada Hamid Raza and Mian Faheem of the Sunni Ittehad Council, Nasir Shirazi and Asad Naqvi of the Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen, Iqbal Dar of the Pakistan Muslim League (Junejo), Gohar Ali of the Muslim League Council and Chaudhry Amjad Warraiech of the Qaumi Muslim League.
The former president said that what what he called the incompetence of the present regime made Pakistan vulnerable to threats, leading to the country's losing its dignity and prestige among members of the world community. Musharraf expressed the hope that Supreme Court of Pakistan and Pakistan's armed forces will play their part for betterment of the country but the change must be brought to the situation by political parties through a democratic process. He said that all the leagues should get united in a grand alliance to pull the country out of this situation. Prior to the press conference Musharraf held a meeting with the above said political personalities.
During meeting they discussed, internal, external, security and economic situation of the country and possibilities of formation of a grand opposition alliance. "We don't even have good relations with the USA, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. These were the countries with which Pakistan had always had good relations. General Musharraf also criticised the economic policies of the present government and said that this government has played havoc with the economic situation of the country and they are trying to fool the people of Pakistan with projection of misleading statistics.
