588 held on power-theft charges

In its vigorous drive against menacing power theft in its region, the Gujranwala Electricity Power Company (GEPCO) arrested 588 electricity thieves and recovered over Rs 9 million last month. GEPCO spokesman told Business Recorder that FIRs have been lodged against 146 accused for criminal proceedings against them.
In different police stations of Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad districts. He said in one incident four employees of GEPCO and meter reader and inspector were attacked and injured by power thieves, when they tried to disconnect the electricity supply to one house in Beriwala area.
