The Supreme Court on Friday granted yet another opportunity to estranged Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Nehal Hashmi to file a reply in a contempt of court case by next week.A three-member special bench led by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, who is also overseeing implementation of the Panama Paper case verdict of the apex court, granted a week to Hashmi.
Supreme Court had taken a suo motu notice against Nehal Hashmi's speech over alleged threats to judges of apex court and joint investigation team (JIT) members, probing offshore accounts of Sharif family.Till second hearing, Hashmi was of the view that no lawyer is ready to plead his case before Supreme Court but during the course of proceedings on Friday, Hashmi succeeded to engage a counsel, Hashmat Habib.
Representing Hashmi, advocate Hashmat Habib tried to convince the bench that injustice was done to his client as his whole career has been destroyed.Habib claimed that Hashmi being a senior lawyer has great respect for the judiciary and bows before the court and cannot even think of issuing any threat to judges as alleged.
He requested the court to issue directions to stop proceedings against his client in courts in Karachi while seeking more time to file a reply in the contempt plea in the interest of justice.Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed that the court wanted to be fair with him [Hashmi] then he should also be fair to this court.
Later, the bench adjourned the hearing of case till June 23.
