Punjab Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education, Khawaja Salman Rafique has said that government is focusing on provision of quality healthcare services to the patients in the hospitals and to control spread of diseases. "A comprehensive prevention of diseases programme is being implemented in the province of Punjab," Salman said this while addressing the launching ceremony of mass drug administration for trachoma under Global Elimination of Trachoma organized by National Trachoma Task Force Pakistan at a local hotel, here on Saturday.
Besides Chairman National Committee for Eye Health Pakistan and Asad Aslam Khan Professor of Ophthalmology, King Edward Medical College, Director International Trachoma initiatives Paul Emerson, Medical Advisor CBM Dr Babar Qureshi, Regional Director Tanja Kern, Country Director Farah Naz, Country Manager Fred Hollows Foundation, coordinators from different provinces and a number of experts attended the ceremony.
Professor Asad Aslam Khan informed that 'National Trachoma Task Force' has conducted a survey regarding trachoma disease in 54 districts of Pakistan wherein it was revealed that the one of the major causes of blindness in Pakistan is the disease of Trachoma. He said that the percentage of the disease was very high in Kamber Shehzad Kot and Chitral. He informed that medicine would be administered to the people at mass level to eradicate the disease.
On this occasion, Khawaja Salman Rafique appreciated the efforts and collaboration of National Trachoma Task Force, National Committee for Eye Health Pakistan, WHO, ITI and Fred Hallows Foundation Pakistan. He further said that these organizations and NGOs actually helping the federal as well as provincial governments for a greater cause to overcome the diseases.
