Karachi Press Club and its adjoining areas on Monday became battleground when teachers, college students and ex-police cops clashed with the police during their demonstrations they were staging in favour of their demands. Hundreds of teachers staged protest against the Sindh government for non-payment of salaries for last two years. The teachers tried to march towards Sind Chief Minister's CM House when police interrupted them to prevent their bid to enter red zone security area.
Police used baton-charge and water cannons to disperse the protesting teachers and some twenty of them were taken into custody. Till filing of this story the teachers were under detention. Meanwhile, teachers announced they would continue their protest till their demands were met. Hundreds of students of Aisha Bawany Government College protested against the closure of their institution despite the court's orders that were issued on Saturday to resume classes in the college.
On Monday morning, the students attempted to block Shaarey Faisal but limited their protest to the college gate due to intervention by police personnel. Chanting slogans against the College Trust, protesting students held the provincial education department responsible for the delay in their studies. Taking notice of the protest, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered that the college be reopened and the educational activities be resumed, immediately.
Similarly, the ex-police cops who were sacked from their services over pay dispute were beaten up by on-duty policemen when one of the ex-cops attempted to commit self-immolation while police contingent tried to stop him. Police resorted to water cannons and baton-charge to disperse the ex-cops of Sindh Reserve Police during the protest.
