Jamaat-e-Islami chief and Senator, Sirajul Haq, proposed on Monday that the judiciary should appoint the head of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to ensure fair trials. "Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief Justices of all high courts should be given powers to appoint the chairman of NAB," he urged speaking at a press conference at the JI Karachi office Idara Noor-e-Haq.
Slamming the NAB, he said that it facilitated corruption in the country instead of eliminating the menace from the society. He said that the chairman NAB was sacked on corruption charges recently and the post stays vacant until now. "It is the right time for both the government and the leader of the opposition to show some dignity and handover the powers of appointing a NAB chief to the superior judiciary," Siraj said, adding that the appointment of the NAB chief by politicians is root cause of its failure to challenge corrupt elements.
He said that the NAB should be an unbiased institution and accountability process should also be free from influence of politicians. He said that NAB always spared influential people and caught small fishes.
JI chief vowed to continue Jamaat's drive against corruption in the country. He also demanded accountability of those identified in the Panama Papers leaks. He said that though a prime minister was de-seated but the accountability of 436 people was still in pending. He also said that the leaks implicated not only politicians and businessmen but judges and bureaucrats also.
About Karachi, Sirajul Haq said that the country's largest city has been neglected, as Karachiites long for water due to its acute shortage. He expressed concern on the city's ruined condition with decaying infrastructure. He asked what will the future generations have. "Of 118 samples of tap water collected across the city, some 88 were found not potable for human consumption," he said, adding that it was an alarming situation. He asked the government to address the primary civic issues at earliest. He also asserted to support the public in all the challenges they are faced with.
To a question, the JI Chief said that his party would resist if there would be any move to repeal Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution. "The Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution should equally be implemented on judges, generals and bureaucrats," he urged.
