National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi is a leading hospital in Pakistan established for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular diseases. Free General Outpatient and Inpatient Cardiac Services
Getting good health services in Pakistan has always been an expensive idea but NICVD has been offering quality heart healthcare services to common man without any charges. NICVD in collaboration with Government of Sindh started totally free of cost services for all General Inpatients and Outpatients in July 18, 2017. The free services provided to patients during admission and outpatient visit under general category includes ER visit, general ward admission, diagnostic angiography, primary and elective coronary angioplasty, echocardiography, TEE, stress echography, ETT, thallium scan, ECG, X-Ray, laboratory test esp. cardiac enzymes, pacemakers, life-saving devices (ICD and CRT-P/D, adult and paediatric surgeries and medicines.
Satellite Centres in Sindh Province
National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in collaboration with the Government of Sindh has been launching satellite centresat different cities of Sindh Province. Its first satellite unit is functional at Civil Hospital, Larkana since May 13, 2017and providing cardiac emergency, interventional cardiology, echocardiographyand adult / paediatric cardiology services to the people of Larkana and its peripheries.Four such centers in Tando Muhammad Khan, Sehwan, Sukkur and Hyderabad will be operational very soon in 2017. Further three more centers in Nawabshah, Khairpur, and Mithi will be operational in 2018. So that cardiac services can promptly and easily be accessible to population of entire Sindh at their doorstep.
Chest Pain Units
NICVD has introduced a new era of heart healthcare with the establishment Chest Pain Units underflyovers in Karachi at Gulshan-e-IqbalChowrangi, Gulbai,Malir Halt and QayyumabadChowrangi, which have been serving people successfully and treating thousands of patients monthly totally free of cost. This service is one of its kinds and is available round the clock.The Chest Pain Units are well-equipped facility and has the appropriate diagnostic testing available to identify patients with an acute heart attack and is also equipped to resuscitate patients who become unstable. After providing initial treatment, the patient will be shifted immediately to the tertiary care setup at NICVD Cath Lab.In near future, more CPUs will be functional at different localities of Karachi city.
NICVD Rehabilitation and Expansion Program
The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi is presently one of the busiest heart hospitals in the world. It currently caters an average of 1200-1400 patients per day resulting in long waiting lines and an overcrowded facility. Although we are doing the best we can with our resources and capacity, it is imperative to expand our infrastructure by constructing new buildings and adding more space and better services.The expansion plan includes construction of an independent OPD facility, Paediatric Cardiac Unit, Adult Cardiology Block and Rehabilitation of the Existing Block.
Enhanced Patient Care
NICVD have taken measures to improve and enhance patient care. Latest equipment, professionally trained doctors, skilled paramedics, patient-nurse ratio as per international standards, infection control and properhygiene, have markedly decreased rate of morbidity and mortality.Capacity of critical and intensive care units have been doubled and Special Care and Heart Failure Units for cardiac patients requiring extra care, are introduced in General Cardiac Units.Specialists in the field of Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Pulmonology, and Intensive Care have been introduced.
Academics
Training and development is an integral part of NICVD. It is the leading center for fellowship training in Adult Cardiac Medicine, Paediatric Cardiology, Anaesthesiology and Cardiac Surgery both for Adult and Paediatrics. In total 36 Fellow Trainees have passed out in last two and half years.
