The investigators have extended the probe to spellbindingly malicious social networking task-oriented game 'Blue Whale' or similar dares to ascertain the motive behind stabbing attacks in the city. A nearly dozen women have so far been stabbed at different parts of the city particularly Gulistan-e-Jauhar area during last 12 days.
The investigators believe that these stabbings were being perpetrated by not a single person but a group of assailants, targeting women in the broad daylight at main arteries of the city. Sources inside police department disclosed that the investigators had also sought help from technology experts to identify the perpetrators of stab attacks on women.
Amid several dimensions of probe, the investigators are of the view that online games, which are not only killing the precious time of the students but led recent suicide incidents in India, may have been one of the reasons for ongoing stab attacks in Pakistan. They have also urged the technology giants to have a thorough review on inventions of 'deadly' games.
"Before the games go online, technologists much check their social ramifications," an IT expert told Business Recorder. The investigators are also probing to find out any linkage of these stabbing incidents with outlawed or terrorist organizations with the motive to force women involving in academic, professional and domestic affairs to remain huddled into home.
All the incidents of stabbing have occurred in the East Zone, and within the jurisdictions of Shahrah-e-Faisal police station, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Aziz Bhatti and Gulshan-e-Iqbal police stations.
The victims and their families refused to share what they had faced while being attacked due to security and privacy concerns. They also expressed distrust in police and judicial system and appeared to be reluctant to lodge their first investigation report (FIR) at the concerned police stations. None of the some six victims contacted by this paper consented to talk with arguing that their statements might create social issues for them.
"Rule of law doesn't exist in the country and we don't expect justice from the system," said father of a victim who wished not to be named. "We only expect divine justice," he said. Officials at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station said a single stabbing incident occurred in its jurisdiction as an unidentified assailant injured a woman identified as Christina Masih with a sharpened tool.
"FIR has not been registered as the victim or her family did not approach police," said a cop, adding that they avoided lodging FIR on behalf of the state, due to legal ambiguities.
This is a new trend to harass the Karachiities who remain reluctant to cooperate with police who complain that non-cooperation of citizens creates unwarranted hurdles to sort out the case. They say that investigators would certainly take more time to nab the culprits due to this reason.
Needless to mention, in the late 1980s, hammer gang (Hathora group) and then underpants gang (Chaddah group) terrorized Karachiities for years and no authority bothered to disclose the details about their affiliations and the motive behind their brutality that left dozens of innocent citizens dead and millions traumatized.
Despite the passage of over 30 years, police cops are doing nothing new as they are clueless about the motive behind the incidents, leaving the most vulnerable segment of the society at the mercy of unknown stabbers.
The citizens raised accusing fingers upon the performance of LEAs for their failure to nab the assailants despite continued attacks on females. They said that increasing blade attacks also prompted female home servants to stay indoors in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, the most affected area where six cases of stabbings had been registered during the last 12 days. It is relevant to mention here that police had announced Rs 0.5 million as reward for the informer.
A senior official at the Shaarey Faisal Police Station said the police patrolling was intensified in the area besides deployment of plain- clothed officials at various locations to trace the assailants. "Our initial investigations suggested that there were more than three men involved in this illicit activity. They vowed to trace and deal with them with iron hands.
Police said a woman was stabbed near Millennium Mall in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area whereas another was attacked near Aziz Bhatti Park in Gulshan-e-Iqbal in the jurisdiction of the Aziz Bhatti police station.
Similar incidents were reported at Gulshan-e-Jamal, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Pehlwan Goth area of Gulistan-e-Jauhar. The city police have also released CCTV footage of the attacker. In these videos, a young man wearing a helmet is seen approaching a victim and then stabbing her before fleeing from the scene.
Karachi police chief in his statement claimed to have formed separate teams for the arrest of persons involved in the offence. One team is headed by the DIG CIA whereas another team is working under the DIG East. He said the assailant is most likely a psychopath. Police is working on few available clues and also focus on persons involved previously in similar cases. He appealed to citizens to help police by providing information (if any) related to the incidents. He also asked the media not to sensationalize the case as the culprit might enjoy it negatively while it could encourage others to do so for publicity.
