Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani on Wednesday disappointed the liberal progressive class by barring Senator Sherry Rehman from speaking against a hate speech delivered by Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd) against Ahmedis in the National Assembly. Rabbani, a left-wing politician, stopped Sherry from speaking on a point of public importance about the tirade of Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd), the husband of Maryam Nawaz against the Ahmadi community along with a group of hardliner MPs in the premises of Parliament.
"Our faith is not that weak to be misguided...a member parliament [Safdar] shouted slogans against a persecuted community [Ahmadis], which falls in category of hate speech and there should be action against him," she said while referring to Safdar's speech. Upon this, the chairman Senate immediately resorted to switch off the microphone of the woman senator under the pretext of the rules that, according to Rabbni, do not allow to discuss the member of another house as Safdar is a sitting MNA.
A day ago in National Assembly, the son-in-law of the disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, accused Qadianis of acting against the country's interests and called for action against its members. Sherry seemed disappointed when Rabbani stopped her from raising the issue and shouted without the microphone that if this house can not discuss such an important matter, what else could be the right place to take up the matter.
Speaking on a point of public importance, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Senator Muhammad Ali severely criticized Shahid Khaqan's administration, saying the forced disappearances of Turkish nationals who are living in the country on valid visas constitute a violation of international law. "If a person comes to your country [Pakistan] after getting a valid visa for a job, the government is bound to ensure his or/her security, and you can not deport a person if he/she has life threats, death penalty or torture in his home country," he added.
The government should not make the country a laughing stock before the whole world by kidnapping the Turkish nationals who are working in Pakistan legally, he said, adding, "We must not violate the international declaration, to which Pakistan is a signatory just for the sake of our relations with Recep Tayyip Erdo?an of Turkey."
He also demanded that a Turkish educationist who along with his family had mysteriously gone missing should be recovered as it is shameful for the country where people who are living under valid visas are being treated like criminals.
The chairman Senate referred the issue of forced disappearances and deportation issue of Turkish educationists to Senate Standing Committee on Interior after Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif of MQM-P sought his intervention into the matter.
Speaking on another point of order, the ruling PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan vent his anger on PPP and PTI over the passage of a resolution which stated that a person who cannot become a member of the Parliament should not become an office-bearer of any political party. He said that the PPP must not forget its past before criticizing the PML-N and bringing such a controversial resolution to the house.
