It must be a matter of great relief for everyone that Pakistan and the United States have agreed to continue bilateral engagements at all levels. The two countries have arrived at this decision at a delegation-level talks between Pakistan and the US held at the Foreign Office. The two sides are said to have reviewed the state of play in the relationship in the wake of the US Strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia and agreed to continue discussions on all matters of mutual interest. Reiterating Pakistan's stance for a politically negotiated settlement owned and led by the Afghans, the foreign secretary has been quoted as reaffirming Pakistan's constructive participation in all regional and bilateral mechanisms aimed at pursuing a peaceful solution to the Afghan conflict.
The tensions caused by US President Donald Trump's speech in which he unveiled his administration's new policy on Afghanistan and South Asia seem to have begun to subside. The recovery of a kidnapped North American family by Pakistani troops through intelligence sharing between the US and Pakistan is indicative of normalization of bilateral relationship that had come under a lot of pressure following Trump's controversial speech.
