An accountability court on Tuesday sent former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and other accused to jail on judicial remand till November 4, in Rs 5.76 billion corruption case. NAB Sindh produced Memon and other accused before the court under strict security arrangements. The NAB sought physical remand of the accused, which was opposed by the defence counsels.
They argued that NAB had already completed investigation and filed reference against the accused. The court sent the accused to jail on judicial remand till November 4. The former minister's counsel filed an application in the court seeking B-Class in the prison and medical facilities for his client. The judge issued notice to NAB on the former minister application and adjourned further hearing till November 4.
Talking to media after the hearing, Sharjeel Memon questioned why Sharif family was given bails while he has been arrested despite appearing in the courts. He said he would see if Nawaz Sharif was arrested on his return from Saudi Arabia. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders and provincial ministers were also present in the court room when the former minister and other accused were produced in the court.
The former minister and other accused were kept in provincial headquarters of NAB after their arrest from Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday. A team of doctors examined Memon and other accused in the morning and declared them fit.
The former minister was taken into custody from Sindh High Court after a bench rejected their bail plea in a corruption case pertaining to the award of advertisements at 'exorbitant rates' through the abuse of his power. NAB officials had also arrested 11 co-accused in the case who had been accompanied Memon in the court. Out of the 11, five had handed over themselves to NAB officials whereas the remaining seven were arrested along with Memon. One accused in the case had been granted extension in his bail.
