Around 3.65million children below age of five, will be vaccinated during three-day anti-polio drive, beginning in 13 high-risk districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Monday (today). In this regard, a meeting was held at Emergence Operation Centre (EOC) to review the arrangements regarding the anti-polio campaign, chaired by EOC Coordinator Atif Rehman here on Sunday. Director EPI Dr Ikram Shah, Unicef team leader, Dr Johar Khan, BMGF technical focal person, Dr Imtiaz Ali Shah, team leader WHO Dr Abadi Nasir, and other relevant officers were present in the meeting.
The meeting was informed about the arrangements of the three-day anti-polio campaign, which would be carried out in 13 districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Kohat, Karak, Hangu, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank and DI Khan.
During the drive, the meeting said more than 3.65million children below age of five, will be vaccinated, for which team of nearly 12,547 trained polio workers was formed, including 10,918 mobile, 848 fixed, 609 transit, and 172 roaming. Around 2,888 area incharges have been deputed to monitor the performance of the polio teams.
In the campaign, the children below age of five years of Afghan Refugees and IDPs will also be given polio drops in more than 22 camps. Atif Rehman while addressing the meeting stressed the need for mutual coordination between all institutions, saying that the anti-polio drive could only be successful with joint efforts and cooperation of the all institutions to make possible prevention of this fatal disease.
He expressed hope that the police and law enforcement agencies would extend full cooperation during the campaign. He said the polio cases have been dropped considerably due to constant efforts. However, he said the target is to eradicate polio from KP province as well as entire region.
