Centre for Coastal and Deltaic Studies, University of Sindh Campus Thatta in collaboration to Federation Handicap International- Pakistan organized one day seminar on "Climate Change and Coastal Issues in Sindh: Academic and Research Institutions' Perspective", held at University of Sindh Campus Thatta.
In the presidentional remarks Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat, Vice Chancellor University of Sindh, admired the efforts of administrations of Centre for Coastal and Deltaic Studies, University of Sindh Campus Thatta and Federation Handicap International for jointly ventures and organizing this historical event.
He also emphasized that role of academia and research institutes are of paramount importance to actually understand the problem and resolve through appropriate interventions. He hoped that, by organizing such seminars, we will be able to propose a way forward on how academia and Research Institutions can play a positive role in promoting climate change and coastal issues at different level of forums.
The Chief Guest of the occasion Engineer Sadiq Ali Memon, District President, Former Minister and Member Parliament Sindh PPP highlighted few factors contributing toward climate change and emphasized on the need to devise disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation integrated strategies at all levels. He appreciated the role of international and national NGOs in development of local communities but also suggested to promote more collaboration between government, NGOs and academia. At the last moment of the address, he offered his and his teams 'full support.
Guest of Honor, Dr Asif Inam, Director General National Institute of Oceanography Karachi, also suggested that this is the right time that academia and research institutes come forward to carry on the joint and collective efforts to solve the coastal issues. Professor Dr Sarfraz Hussain Solangi, Pro Vice Chancellor University of Sindh Campus Thatta did keynote speech and shared major issues and reasons of Climate Change and its impact on coastal belt of Pakistan. Earlier, Professor Dr Mukhtiar Ahmed Mahar, Director Centre for Coastal and Deltaic Studies formally started the seminar with a welcome address and main objective of seminars.
