Germany reveals plans to go environmental friendly, reduce plastic waste

In order to fight plastic waste and going more environmentally friendly, Germany has announced its plans to stand against the ‘throwaway society’.

Earlier this week, Germany’s environmental minister, Svenja Schulze, revealed a new five-point plan in order to lessen the amount of plastic waste produced by the company. “With these measures, we are reversing the trend in the use of plastics. We produce far too much plastic in our consumer and throwaway society.”

Germany’s five-point plan to cut down plastic waste includes reducing the use of unnecessary products and packaging, increasing the percentage of waste that gets recycled, replacing existing packaging with environmentally friendly alternatives, contributing to international efforts to cut down the amount of plastic waste at sea, and encouraging better separation of plastics from organic waste.

Schulze hopes to go for more biodegradable packaging, such as using adhesive label in place of plastic bags for loose fruits and vegetables, and introduce new licensing rules through which the less environmental friendly packaging will pay more fees. Also, as per Deutsche Welle, the government aims at increasing its plastic recycling targets from 36% to 63% by 2022.

The five-point plan is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2019 in the country. Aiming to ‘turnaround from more and more to less and less waste, Schulze said, “With these measures, we are initiating a trend reversal in the use of plastics.”
