The government has borrowed $17.028 billion for balance of payment and budgetary support during last four years, official documents revealed. The government also borrowed US $7.050 billion for energy and power sector projects and $3.752 billion for transport & communications related projects. The borrowings for governance, research and statistics sectors projects were $2.626 billion.
The sector-wise disbursement of loans and grants showed that the government has also taken $1.699 million for education and training related projects and $1.426 billion for rural development & poverty reduction. The present government has also taken $953 million loans for agriculture sector, $707 million for health & nutrition and US $1.607 billion under the head of others.
The donor-wise disbursement of loans and grants from 2012-13 to October 2017 included US $5.877 billion from World Bank (WB), US $5.750 billion from China, and US $4.462 billion from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The government's borrowing from Islamic Development Bank (IDB) stood at US $4.339 billion, from Japan US $666 million, from Saudi Arabia US $429 million and from France US $189 million. The borrowing from others stood at US $521 million.
According to the donors-wise disbursement during the period under review, US $1.324 billion from the United Kingdom were reported as the highest. Sources in Finance Ministry stated that donor-wise disbarment from USA was US $594 million while from World Bank (WB) it was US $233 million.
Germany provided US $124 million grant to Pakistan during 2012-13 to October 2017, ADB US $114 million, European Union (EU) US $108 million, China US $74 million, Japan US $62 million and US $31 million were received from others.
