An appellate tribunal headed by a Lahore High Court judge on Friday issued notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in an appeal of Ishaq Dar against rejection of his nomination papers for Senate election.
The tribunal comprising Justice Aminuddin Khan also issued notices to the commission for Saturday (today) on two other petitions of Andleeb Abbas of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) challenging the acceptance of nomination papers of Nuzhat Sadiq and Sadia Abbasi, sister of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
Salman Aslam Butt argued on behalf of Dar that the Returning Officer (RO) rejected his nomination papers without due diligence of facts. He said the RO failed to hold proper scrutiny of the nomination papers required under the Representation of Peoples Act 1976.
He therefore prayed the court to set aside the decision of RO and declare him eligible to contest the election of Senate. The RO had rejected the nomination papers of Ishaq Dar on objections of Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed of PTI.
He had pleaded that Dar had been facing proceedings on charges of corruption and money laundering and had also been declared absconder by the accountability court. He also challenged signatures of Dar in the nomination papers.
The RO rejected the nomination papers of Dar on the basis of discrepancy found in his signatures. Abbas alleged that the respondent candidates failed to declare assets and liabilities owned by them and their spouses for which they were bound under Representation of Peoples Act 1976. The respondents also concealed the details of their income tax and wealth tax. She asked the court to set aside the decision of the RO and declare the respondents ineligible to contest the senate polls.
