Governor Punjab Rafique Rajwana has said that the business community is backbone of economy and it must be facilitated for sustainable economic growth of the country. He was speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Wednesday. The Governor agreed with LCCI President Malik Tahir Javaid that prices of gas and other inputs should be same throughout the country.
He said protests and sit-ins at Mall Road have become major issues for the business community, students, patients and masses. Politicians and civil society should show responsibility and avoid disturbing trade and economic activities. He said recommendations regarding parking plazas have been forwarded to the Punjab government.
LCCI President Malik Javaid stressed the need for lowering the electricity price to lessen the cost of production. While calling for uniformed rate for gas, he said it is not fair to keep comparatively high price of gas for Punjab.
He said The Mall is an important and central road of Lahore city but protests and sit-ins on every day has badly affected the traders business despite the Lahore High Court orders that no one would be allowed to protest on that road by blocking, sit-downs or public meetings. Serious violation of this decision is being observed on daily basis, he added.
He said many of LCCI members had set up industrial units on the main roads of city which were established around Lahore under Rural Industrial Scheme. The LCCI's proposal was favourably considered that these industries should be regularized at their existing locations and the Secretary Industries also agreed in this regard to submit a report to the provincial government for approval, he pointed out.
He said there are almost 1200 industrial plots available in industrial estates whereas more or less 40,000 industrial units are located on main roads of Lahore city. He said all these industries should be declared as part of industrial corridor and this is how commercial tax imposed by the LDA will be waived.
