Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who was elected as acting President of the PML-N on Tuesday, had earlier served as the party president in 2002 after registration of cases against Nawaz Sharif. Starting his political career as president of Lahore Chamber of Commerce in 1985, Shahbaz was first elected as the member of the provincial assembly of Punjab in 1988. In 1990, he was elected as a member of the National Assembly and then again as a provincial assembly member in 1993.
Shahbaz first became the chief minister of Punjab after being elected as an MPA in 1997. In 2006, Shahbaz was again elected as the party president. The younger Sharif became the chief minister of Punjab for the second time, after being elected to the Punjab Assembly in a by-election in 2008. Shahbaz took over the office of the Punjab CM for the third time following his party's victory in 2013.
His election as acting president of the PML-N on Tuesday has ended rumors regarding division within the party but most challenging task for Shahbaz is to keep the PML-N united and steer the party to victory in general elections in 2018.
Soon after the election as acting party president, Shahbaz Sharif went to Pattoki where he addressed a public gathering and criticized PTI Chief Imran Khan for leveling baseless allegations. In his address, Shahbaz requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of Imran's allegations about Multan Metro so that facts could be placed before the people. He said Imran Khan has caused economic disaster in KPK and used to tell lie day and night. He asked Imran Niazi to form a party of liars.
