Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday proposed Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to publish digitized maps of national and provincial assemblies' constituencies on its website. In a meeting of Special Committee on Delimitation of Constituencies, which was held here to elect its chairman, the PTI MNA said that the ECP should publish digitized maps of all the constituencies to clear the apprehensions of masses.
The ECP, which has already suspended its two officials for leaking out the maps of delimitation of constituencies, assured the PTI MNA that it will look into the matter. In its first meeting, the panel unanimously elected Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Deputy Speaker National Assembly, as chairman of the special committee. On March 13, National Assembly passed a motion to constitute a special committee of lawmakers to examine proposals and objections related to delimitation of constituencies.
Expressing deep concern over reservations of MNAs regarding recently undertaken delimitation by the ECP, the committee constituted a nine-member working group under the convener-ship of MNA Daniyal Aziz. It will make suggestions/proposals within three days to address the issue of new delimitation of constituencies which would be sent to ECP for resolution of the issues highlighted by the panel.
Clock-wise delimitation, stark discrepancies while determining the boundaries of constituencies on different criteria of population, issue of Sections 20/21 of Election Act, 2017, constitution of election tribunals for hearing appeals against the delimitation of constituencies and poor performance of ECP with regard to provision of maps of constituencies to general public also came under discussion.
The meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Abdul Qadir Baloch (retd), Minister for State and Frontier Regions, Daniyal Aziz, Minister for Privatization, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mehmood Bashir Virk, Minister for Law and Justice, Miftah Ismail, Advisor to PM on Finance, Zahid Hamid, Syed Naveed Qamar, Dr Arif Alvi, Siraj Muhammad Khan, SA Iqbal Quadri, Naeema Kishwer Khan, Ayisa Nasir, Ghous Bux Khan Mahar, Sahibzada Tariq Ullah, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Shahji Gul Afridi, and officials of ECP, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Statistics.
