The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar, who allegedly led the 'fake' police encounter to kill 27-year old Naqeebullah Mehsood, within two days and submit a report before the honorable court.
Headed by the chief justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, the larger bench of the apex court was hearing a suo moto case at its Karachi registry of Naqeebullah's alleged extra judicial murder. The CJP had taken suo moto notice when the issue of the killing of Naqeebullah came to the limelight. At the outset of the hearing, the provincial police chief AD Khawaja informed the judges that they had obtained the CCTV footages of Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad and Jinnah International Airport Karachi. He requested the court to allow them more time to go through those footages.
The CJP asked the police chief that how much more time he required on which AD Khawaja replied that hopefully there will be some progress on the case in two to three days. Putting off the matter till March 19, the court directed the police to nab Rao Anwar and submit a report on the next hearing which will be conducted at SC Islamabad. Speaking to the media after the hearing, AD Khawaja said that Rao Anwar should have surrendered before the court, adding that there was no evidence to suggest that Rao Anwar had fled abroad. He said they needed more CCTV footages as the footages that the police have obtained were not clear. Talking to the media, Naqeebullah's father outrightly rejected the reports of compromise, saying that money cannot compensate even for a hair of his son. He said that they will keep appearing before the court until Rao Anwar was arrested and the justice was served.
