The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted one-month time to the federal government to bring back Husain Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the US, saying the deadline is final as no excuse will be accepted once it is over. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar hearing a suo motu on the Memogate Scandal inquired from the foreign and interior secretaries about the time that they need to bring Haqqani back.
Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Bashir Memon informed the bench that judicial magistrate Karachi had issued arrest warrants for Haqqani that would be sent to Washington and his residence in Karachi. An FIR has been registered against Haqqani regarding misappropriation of funds. The DG FIA said there is a process for issuing red warrant, which they have to adopt, adding that next month he is going to America and there he will hire a lawyer to file a case against the former ambassador.
The Chief Justice observed that it is asked in TV talk shows why the court has reopened the Memogate Scandal and what objectives the apex court wants to achieve through this case. Justice Saqib said the court has no ulterior designs but it only wants the implementation of law. He said there should be no discussion in media on pending cases, adding they have noticed that many talk show participants who have no knowledge of law discuss them. He said they have been seriously mulling banning programmes wherein sub judice cases are debated.
The Chief Justice said Husain Haqqani had given undertaking to this court that he would come back on a four-day notice. He said that it is the government's responsibility to comply with the court's directives.
