International Labour Day also known as May Day is being marked across the country like other parts of the world on Tuesday (today) with a resolve to continue efforts for safeguarding the rights of workers by giving them due place in society.
All government offices, private organisations, educational institutions and markets will remain closed on Tuesday. Different political and labour organizations‚ particularly the labour wings of political parties and professional bodies are organizing programmes to highlight significance of the day and rights of the workers. Seminars and rallies are also being held in different cities across the country, to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives in Chicago in 1886 for the rights of the labourers.
Radio and TV channels will present special programmes while newspapers will bring out supplements. Several labour organizations including Pakistan Workers Confederation, National Labour Federation Pakistan, All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union, political parties and social organizations have chalked out programmes to take out rallies in support of labour community s rights.
"Trade union is the basis of democracy but it has not been given its due recognition though it has always been on the forefront in every movement," trade union leaders, said.
