Inspector General Sindh Police A D Khwaja on Tuesday urged the business community to take the ownership of Karachi as well as police department saying that durable peace is imperative for producing maximum commercial activities in the port city.
Addressing the traders during his visit to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) he said sustainable peace and continuation of economic and commercial activities are part and parcels. "Where there is peace, there is development. The investors will not reluctant to invest in a peaceful environment" he said.
It is the responsibly of police to ensure protection of society including trader fraternity. However, currently the provincial police was running short of human resources and infrastructure. He said the police department needs technological advancement cope with the contemporary challenges. The mega city having some 22.5 million populations lacks proper security arrangements such as surveillance cameras, he said.
A safe city project has been launched in Lahore with installation of as many as 12,000 security cameras at a cost of Rs 10 billion whereas Karachi, despite having security challenges is yet to have such multi- billion security plan. Karachi has 27,000 policemen while Lahore has 28,000 officials, he said.
He said ethnic and sectarian fault lines are too much in Karachi and people are largely divided into sectarian and ethnic grounds.
He deplored that trillions of rupees have been spent on deep sea project, but the road infrastructure is dilapidated allowing hardly 10 trucks to pass from.
IG said the years-long old wireless system has lost its effectiveness in this digital era. He requested the traders to provide 4G devices to police so that the law enforcers would perform duties effectively.
Khwaja said the police complaint centre '15' is performing well since it has been outsourced. Besides, he said every police station has a designated reporting centre, asking the traders to visit these reporting centers and put forward recommendations for further improvement. He also asked the people to lodge FIR over mobile robbery, and street crime incidents.
