Sindh's caretaker Minister for Environment, Coastal Development and Climate Change, Jameel Yusuf, has directed that all the pending NOCs relating to industrial sector should be released after scrutiny as soon as possible, so that industrial sector can increase its role in promoting economy of the country.
Presiding over the introductory briefing of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Authority, he also directed the environmental officers to perform their duties in accordance with the law.
He asked them to take action against complaints and encourage industrial sector to become more and more viable and also shoulder their social responsibilities, jointly.
He directed them that during the monsoon, cleaning of sewage and other drains should be made in the light of directives of the Sindh Water Commission. In this regard, he asked the officials to issue instructions to the concerned authorities that they should dispose them to appropriate places so that respective civic agencies could handle it properly and timely. He further said that prominent local members who are experts in the field of coastal and environmental affairs should be inducted to make the Coastal Development Board stronger and beneficial.
He urged the officers to ensure the tracking system in boats of the coastal fishermen for their development and prosperity on priority. He said practical steps are required for completing the development tasks in the coastal areas of Thatta, Sujawal and Badin, respectively at the time of monsoon.
Secretary Environment Mukhtiar Ahmed Soomro said that there should be joint process of implementation of environmental laws through cooperation and assistance for the development of industrial sector and SEPA need to work more efficiently and effectively for it.
DG Coastal Development Authority Ishaq Mahar and Shehryar Qazi apprised the meeting of various development schemes, including 50-acre palm oil production development schemes at the cost of Rs 979.575 million.
They further briefed that work is in progress with the help of private sector for more projects in coastal areas. They said now there is a need for efficient communication and coordination in the coastal areas in the monsoon season, for which assistance from NGOs to give them timely welfare and help would be beneficial for it.
Additional Director General Environment Naeem Mughal stressed on the cooperation of civil society and other institutions on various schemes and programs under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to improve the environment and industrial boost in the province.
He further said that after the 18th amendment, industrial sector under SEPA Act is working to implement the enforcement of environmental laws and cooperation. He said help and cooperation is required from all respective stake holders, in this connection. He said though the implementation of the law enforcement process is slow, the department is taking steps to make it effective.
